Monetaria moneta.

Whole grains, 87 trials: a small benefit on many fronts

A meta-analysis in the European Heart Journal pools the randomised trials on whole grains. Weight, cholesterol and blood pressure fall, but only a little, in trials that last two months on average and count no heart attacks or strokes.
Forty-eight grams of whole grains, weighed dry, come to about ninety grams of food as eaten, or three servings, according to the authors. That is the unit behind a meta-analysis published on 15 September 2026 in the European Heart Journal, open access. For every extra 48 grams a day, body weight falls by 0.20 kilograms. Two hundred grams.

Light at night and the heart: eleven thousand wrist sensors, then an MRI
A UK Biobank study links light in the bedroom during sleep to a thicker, stiffer heart. It is an association, light was recorded for one week only, and the differences lie between one and three per cent.
Between 2013 and 2015 eleven thousand people in Britain wore a small accelerometer on the wrist for seven days. It also held a light sensor. It counted movement and logged how much light fell on the arm during the night. About three years later, 3.1 years at the median, the same people had a cardiac magnetic resonance scan.

Percentage differences in cardiac MRI measures between participants with the highest night-time light exposure and those who never exceeded three lux, with 95 per cent confidence intervals. Red marks measures that rise, blue those that fall. Data from 11,071 UK Biobank participants.

How old the brain looks: Alzheimer's, addiction and psychosis compared, no gap in ADHD or autism

A case-control study published in PLOS Medicine on 21 July 2026 estimates brain age from the grey matter of 2,698 patients with nine disorders and their matched controls. The gap is largest in Alzheimer's, then in heavy alcohol and tobacco use and in psychiatric disorders. It does not appear in ADHD or autism. The study is cross-sectional, one scan per person.
An MRI scan does not carry a date of birth. An algorithm can estimate one all the same. It measures grey-matter volume in 1,016 brain regions and returns an age. When the estimated age exceeds the real one, the brain looks older than it is. The authors call this gap PAD, for predicted age difference.

Sarcopenia: the signal fails between nerve and muscle. Ten older adults, and a drug tested in rats

In the thigh muscle of ten older adults, nine of them weak, the signal between nerve and fibre stalls. In old mice and rats the defect comes with a loss of the NaV1.4 sodium channel. A ClC-1 channel inhibitor made by NMD Pharma, a company that employs ten of the twenty-six authors and helped fund the work, improved strength in rats for a week. The paper has been online since July.
A fine needle goes into the vastus lateralis, the large muscle at the front of the thigh. The nerve fires, the fibre contracts, and the instrument times the delay between the two. The test is single-fibre electromyography. Jitter is how much that delay varies from one impulse to the next. A block is an impulse that sets off and never reaches the fibre.

A circle on maps of Quebec was the scar of an impact
An amateur astronomer spotted a 25-kilometre ring around Lake Marsal. An expedition in October 2025 found shatter cones, the proof of an impact. The age, about 390 million years, is a preliminary estimate, and the source is a conference abstract.

Age of the Uhackatik impact structure in Quebec according to two methods: in blue the range from palaeomagnetism of the impact melt rock, with a central value of about 390 million years; in orange the youngest zircon age measured with lead, a preliminary result.
