Fish head for the bottom: forty years of European trawls find species moving deeper rather than north
Arnaud Auber, Camille Albouy and fourteen colleagues analysed 92,961 hauls from 21 scientific trawl surveys run between 1983 and 2019 in the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Six fish populations in ten moved deeper. North and south were almost evenly split, and in the Mediterranean south won. The study appeared in Nature Communications on 15 July 2026.

Share of fish populations on the European continental shelf that, between 1983 and 2019, moved deeper, north or south, expanded their range, and increased in abundance. A population is one species followed within one trawl survey series.

Hepatitis C in France: among people who use drugs, active infection halves in ten years
Santé publique France and Inserm compared three surveys, from 2004, 2013 and 2023, of people attending harm reduction services. The share with virus in the blood fell from 19.4 to 9.5 per cent. Among people who inject, new infections fell from 6.5 to 2.4 per 100 person-years. Nature Communications released the accepted version on 11 October 2026, with the abstract only.

Left, share of people with hepatitis C virus RNA in the blood in 2013 and 2023, among all people who use drugs recruited at harm reduction services in France and among those who inject. Right, new infections per 100 person-years among people who inject. Black bars show the 95 per cent confidence intervals given in the abstract. The abstract gives no intervals for the 29.6 and 14.5 per cent figures.
