Abstract

Project for creating a geothermal course in the  academic system in El Salvador.

Countries involved: El Salvador and Italy.

The project consists on the development of a geothermal course with the aim to provide training in Geothermal activities for technical and academic/research personnel of the university of El Salvador.  The project will involve the Institute for Geosciences and Earth Resources of the National Research Council of Italy (IGG-CNR), UES - San Salvador, LaGeo - San Salvador, CONACYT El Salvador and the Universities of Palermo (UNIPA).

Main objectives can be summarized as follows:

  • Transfer techniques and scientific know-how in order to contribute to the study of natural resources of geothermal origin in the El Salvador geological area;
  • Develop a suitable  plan for management of the geothermal resources in the next future;
  • Contribute to the setup a specific sector within academic and research institutions responsible for management and exploitation of natural resources, with a resulting increase in their man-power, and, in particular, in the skill of the personnel;
  • Create a closer link between institutions, academic community, and the local population where geothermal activities are carry on (Ahuachapan and Berlin).

As expected consequence of these objectives, the project will be helpful in promoting and improving Academic and Research Institutions as far as the energy field of investigation is concerned. Finally these efforts will contribute to the knowledge in the geothermal energy potentiality  from a the socio-cultural point of view.
